My mind spins endlessly in circles
Weaving up and down
In and out
Turning itself
Inside Out.
My arms flailed outward
Seek to balance my body
As my head
Rolls round
Releasing the cramps of my neck
Finding
Eventually
Its own methodical
Comforting pace.
Relaxing the muscles of my face
Breathing deeply--
As deeply as my insides will allow--
I urge the incessant running of my mind
To slow
To also breathe
To silence the heaves
To choke out the sobs
To concentrate all my energy
Only
On that spinning
Spinning
Circular
Methodical
Motion
Of turning
Twisting
My neck
Allowing the weight of my head
To be pulled by gravity
Into that circle
That repetetive motion
That simple
Sweet
Release.
The lifting of my face to the sun
And the lowering of my chin
To draw strength from the solid ground
As I breathe
Creates a rhythm
That places the earth
In a delicate balance
With only my body
Separating the heavens from the fields.
My body is the horizon;
All I have behind me,
And all that extends before me,
Is found within me--
In the heat of this breath,
In the welling of these tears,
In the swelling of this heart,
In the rhythm of its beating
In the weight of these outstretched limbs
And the pounding of this
Spinning
Spinning
Head.

Studying for Health
Me: Mom, what's amniocentesis?
Mom: When they stick in a big ol' needle to test the fluid for problems.
Me: What kind of problems?
Mom: A variety... I don't know them all; I've never had it done.
Me:...but then how do you know that Jake doesn't have problems?!
Mom: ...He turned out alright.
Bekah: I DIDN'T!!

Brick by Brick
Finals are coming up; major exams at the end of the term that compose 20% of a student's overall class grade. I hate finals soooo much. My brain just doesn't seem to function in the traditional material-remembering style! I am intensely intrigued by some subjects, and can remain fixated on a subject for a couple of weeks... but then it completely leaves me once my curiosity has been satiated, and by the time exams roll around, it's like I'm starting from scratch and learning for the first time. These finals clearly do not take all types of learning into account, and simply can't be an accurate measure of intellect. They represent what society has constructed to measure and tell us our own worth. We should all just rebel and not take them. If the whole senior class refused to take the final exam, would the school really hold the entire class back from graduation? That would not go over well. A rebellion is in order... but it's pretty risky. I guess I'll just go eat soup with a fork instead. That'll teach society a lesson or two.

The Little Things
Today I joined forces with a girl that I don't know very well to attack the driveway of a very good mutual friend.... Sidewalk. Chalk. Everywhere. Quotes, pictures, smiles, and then a good long talk when we were finally discovered! :) Friendship is so therapeutic. The small things bring the biggest smiles. It felt like elementary school...playing outside with the neighborhood kids and then coming inside to be with your family at the end of the day. It's the thought that counts. I'm so happy right now.

Mirrors
It's not about you, cuz I am the fool building castles in the sand.
If I am crazy, just don't care, it doesn't mean I don't want you near...Just take me as I am...So please....Have faith.
--Celine Dion, Faith
What if the girl that I see in the mirror
Isn’t who I want staring back at me?
What if that girl is starting to fear her
Wildest dreams may be sheer fantasy?
What if my talent has been overrated?
What if I simply don’t have what it takes?
What if my promise has already faded?
How can I afford to lose at these stakes?
What if there’s nothing redeeming,
Getting my hopes up and dreaming?
What if no one hears me screaming?
Can’t I just be?
Can’t I just be?

hush the whisperings
focus the eyes
release the mind
let it fly.
drown in the words
float in their wake
feel the surges
hear the quake...
to be a member of an audience
is such a privilege:
to be privy to the exposed soul.
to be an audience...
is such a burden.
to long to own the stage,
to wish to replicate the performance
to yearn to hold such power
at your own fingertips.
but in my own open palms
hovering above
my outstretched finger tips
is emptiness.
the emptiness holds so much.
it tells of dreams
never realized.
hopes
all in vain.
desires
that are pipe dreams
yearning
that is real.
the small body
propelled by unseen force
into desperate
awkward angles
at center stage
is exposed by bright lights
of scrutiny.
A voice that tries
Rather than is
Reveals the amateur
Unable to construct a facade.
the words
do not pour forth
soar
fly
or rain upon the masses...
they drop
as
a
single
coin
pulled by gravity straight to the earth
and spinning mindlessly in circles
before settling
on a dusty floor
under a threadbare chair
in the back corner
of an old theatre.
the images
of standing tall
arms outstretched
face flooded
with emotion
spilling into the air
seem as juvenile
as infant dreams.
ignorant.
undeveloped.
an old dream
aged
cracked
worn and softened
hiding behind a veil
of cobwebs and cracked glass.
i see the girl
wanting to touch
to feel
to experience
to be freed of the constraining bands of civility
failing
to make the connection
failing to rise
words of power
of unadultered being
become
a mockery
it would be better to constrain
refrain
abstain
and let the words exist
in unmarred form
as words on a page waiting
for the next
to bring them to life
to bring them to the people
where they can be felt
and experienced
Looking up to the stage,
to the poet dancing
her words across the time and space,
feeling
resonates in the air
and in the core of every being.
permeated by their intensity
and by her Voice
caressing each word
warming every syllable
my thoughts
are brought
to empty hands.
i clasp them,
only to pull apart once more,
this time
shoving the culprit hands
beneath my legs
to hide the vacant palms
to punish them
for ever believing
and then for hoping
and to deny them the opportunity
to fail
by
accepting
the cruel
ugly
choice of fate
the reality-
to be alone
to be an audience
sitting and watching
as words
spark
meandering
threading their way
among the faces and thoughts
weaving their own pattern
creating their own beauty.
i watch.
The power of words is rivaled only by the dignified authority of their spartan absence.
